Several months ago I sent my first query letter, excited by potential success. Then I waited. And waited. And got distracted by work and home life. Waited a little more. Occasionally looked up additional agent options and planned to do something someday. And now it’s May 2019.
If I’m truthful, I’ve had more than adequate time to send query letters. I just don’t have adequate motivation. It comes down to this: in the warm, chewy center of my being, I have approximately zero interest in trying to convince someone to take on my book so they can convince someone to publish it so those people can convince readers to buy it. Why create such a complicated chain of convincing when I have direct access to those readers via Amazon (and others) and the capacity to cut out the middlemen?
OK, there’s a good reason why. The traditional publishing industry has significant value and it is a badge of honor to get a publishing deal. But I just don’t wanna do it that way. So, instead, I’m heading down the self-publishing path. It means a fairly substantial amount of work and a bit of expense, but it looks like FUN work and WORTHY expense.
For now, it’s listening to podcasts and reading blog posts about the world of self-publishing. Once the real work begins, I’ll capture that journey here.
